Over the past year, we have helped dozens of families with decluttering in their homes and set up organizational systems to help them be successful going forward. Sounds easy, right?
You might be surprised to know that many people struggle with how and where to start when decluttering or downsizing. It sounds easy enough but it can feel very overwhelming, especially without support from family, friends, or professionals.
Most of our clients just don’t know where to start and the process to use. We always like to encourage our clients to start small. One drawer, one cupboard at a time; especially if you have been living in one home for several years. It takes time to declutter and downsize, it is not a weekend project.
In general, we all just have so much stuff, way more than we need in our everyday lives. We hold onto items for ‘just in case’ reasons and sometimes never use them and they just take up space.
Every organizing project, decluttering or downsizing starts with sorting the items you have on hand: how many do you have of one item, how many similar items do you have, and how many items do you have that you may no longer need. Set aside one or two hours a week to focus on some smaller areas in your home first and then move on to bigger projects.
Also, keep in mind that most times children are not wanting the things that we have kept. Those special teacups or trinkets in the dining room cabinet may not have the same sentimental value to them. It is hard to let go, but they will find a new home and someone who will appreciate them and perhaps be in need.
Recently we worked with a client that wanted to donate items to the local soup kitchen and provide to them anything that they might need. Many organizations need various items and we don’t realize it. This one organization needed large kitchen utensils and so that was one of the ways my client was able to give back and find homes for items no longer needed.
