The most asked question that I always receive is what do I do with all the things in my home that I no longer want or need.
Sure, it is possible to just rent a big bin and dump it all; which I hear about folks doing all the time. This just is so heartbreaking.
Here are a few tips to get you started:
DONATION CENTERS
They will happily take most things. You must look to see what they do and don’t accept. Many do not accept large furniture items. When helping clients I am usually able to move at least 85 to 90% of their items to a new home and they avoid going to the landfill.
LOCAL ORGANIZATIONS OR GROUPS
Many local groups are looking for or need items and many times these groups are helping those less fortunate.
ESTATE SALE BUYOUTS
There are some companies that will come and take all of your things away for a small amount of money.
SELL YOUR STUFF
There are a myriad of ways to sell your stuff and make some money. It is not a get rich venture, but it certainly does help to offset expenses that might come with moving.
I find this to be the most successful for my clients.
AUCTIONS
Did you know that an online auction is a very effective way to remove and sell items from an Estate liquidation?
When helping clients I am usually able to move at least 85 to 90% of their items to a new home and they avoid going to the landfill.
One of my favourite successes is a family that had a small rocking horse collection. Although some of the family thought it was all junk; it was not. We donated all of the little horses to a local horse business that supports local children in need in their programs as gifts. They were so thrilled, my client was beyond excited. What a great way to repurpose some old and vintage items that will have a new life!
